Definition: Soviet montage theory is an approach to understanding and creating cinema that relies heavily upon editing (montage is French for "assembly" or "editing"). It is the principal contribution of Soviet film theorists to global cinema, and brought formalism to bear on filmmaking.
The Russian revolution has had a great impact on our society today. From our knowledge filmmakers in the Soviet Union invented a new language of film. Its a technique that still inspires filmmakers today. After the 1917 revolution film stock was in very short supply and then left filmmakers a chance to experiment with what they have. This consisted of multiple shots from old films. Initially this is how montage came about. It began with filmmakers piecing together different shots and seeing what would happen of they were put together
Christian Marclay
Christian Ernest Marclay born January 11, 1955 is a visual artist and composer. Marclay's work explores connections between sound, noise, photography, video, and film .During his early years Marclay began experimenting with music by collecting records and participating in performances to show off his talents such as playing instruments, making covers and cover art. Only during his recent years did he recognise his artistic talents by producing visual artist. Through this career in art was beginning to be recognised as he won best artist in The United States of America winning the Golden Lion for the clock. His work " the white cube" has also been represented as a solo Exhibition in London. `In other words his strengths lie in art. I believe his work "Telephones" and "the clock" are one of his best pieces of work and continue to inspire many of us until this day. What interests me so much in these pieces of work is that they include film footage from the past. When I think of the work associated with montage, It is usually just a combination of photos but I think its even more interesting that he created a montage to create a film with a duration of 7 minutes. I have never seen work like this and I think its a great way to experiment with different footage. I believe both these project have similarities such in "telephones" he combined a various black and white footage sourced from more than one hundred and thirty classic Hollywood films and in his project " the clock" it is the same concept as it contains thousands of clips but what they both have in common is that It seems very clear that Marclay wanted to get a message across with these films. He Highlights in both pieces of work in what type of society we live in today. In telephones it shows how we were coming to an end of an era where telephones play a different part in our society and it no longer has the same impact it did before. In "clock" it shows that we are unaware of how quickly time is changing and it also makes unaware of how much little time we left because it
